While supplements do have benefits, how do we know which ones to choose?
Supplements should be just that, a supplement to your diet, not used to replace whole foods in your diet. Unless someone is truly deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral, a laundry list of supplements should not be needed. A lot of vitamins and minerals are found in our food (fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and seafood).
One particular supplement that can help you reach your goals is protein powder; it can help reach your daily protein needs if you are having trouble eating enough protein, but it should not replace food sources of protein. Be cautious of using protein bars, due to many being high in calories and are not as nutritious as they may appear.
*Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider or registered dietitian regarding protein intake, especially if you have a history of kidney disease.*
